The State Attorney's Office is an independent and autonomous judicial body authorized and obliged to act against perpetrators of criminal offenses and other punishable acts, to take legal action for the protection of the property of the Republic of Croatia and to submit legal remedies for the protection of the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia and its laws.

The State Attorney's Office exercises its powers based on the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia, international agreements that are part of the legal order of the Republic of Croatia, the acquis communautaire of the European Union, laws and other sources of law.

The State Attorney's Office is established as a single judicial body whose scope, powers and jurisdiction are determined by law.

The State Attorney's Office of the Republic of Croatia is established for the entire territory of the Republic of Croatia.
The following are established in the Republic of Croatia:

Special state attorney's offices may be established to deal with certain types of cases.
Each State Attorney's Office shall act in accordance with its subject-matter and territorial jurisdiction, unless otherwise provided by law.
Municipal state attorney's offices are subordinated to the county state attorney's offices, and county state attorney's offices and special state attorney's offices are subordinated to the State Attorney's Office of the Republic of Croatia.

State Attorney General

The head of the State Attorney's Office of the Republic of Croatia is the State Attorney General of the Republic of Croatia.
A person who meets the general and special requirements to be appointed as Deputy State Attorney General of the Republic of Croatia may be appointed as State Attorney General of the Republic of Croatia.

The State Attorney General of the Republic of Croatia is appointed by the Croatian Parliament for a term of four years, at the proposal of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, with the prior opinion of the competent committee of the Croatian Parliament. After the term’s expiry, the State Attorney General may be reappointed to the same duty. No one can be appointed to this office more than twice.
If the State Attorney General of the Republic of Croatia is not reappointed to the same position or is dismissed, s/he shall continue to work as Deputy State Attorney General of the Republic of Croatia.
The State Attorney's Council is the body that renders a decision on the occurrence of circumstances for dismissal.

According to the State Attorney's Office Act, the State Attorney's Office is a vertically hierarchically structured organization headed by the State Attorney General of the Republic of Croatia.

In addition to the State Attorney's Office of the Republic of Croatia and USKOK, the organization of the State Attorney's Office includes 15 county state attorney's offices.
(Bjelovar, Dubrovnik, Karlovac, Osijek, Pula, Rijeka, Sisak, Slavonski Brod, Split, Šibenik, Varaždin, Velika Gorica, Vukovar, Zadar, Zagreb) and 25 municipal state attorney's offices.
